Laughingstock

We’re at 18 weeks, or maybe 19, depending on who you believe: The doctor or some fancy machine.Anyway, speaking of the “fancy machine,” the sonogram equipment provided me with the best moment to date in the pregnancy Wednesday.
As Dr. Fahmy ran the wand over my wife’s mid-section, she pointed out a number of features – also, once again, confirming it will be a Ray not an Edith – from his waving hands to his tiny thigh bones.
At one point he rested his hand on his forehead as if he were embarrassed of his new parents, which is probably something that he should get used to.
But as Dr. Fahmy explained the “alien-ness” of Ray’s current features, she said something that made Tiffany laugh. And when Tiffany laughed, you could see Ray react. The doctor even pointed it out.
“He’s moving; he heard you laugh,” she said.
I could see my son responding to his mother.
It was the first time we were able to see that connection. He is no longer some “alien” taking up space in my wife’s uterus, but our child, who is growing use to hearing our voices.
Over the next several decades, he will likely react differently to us at different stages of our lives. I’m sure we will continue to embarrass him as we did Wednesday, and there will be anger and sadness and joy and wonder and new discoveries.
But seeing his reaction to hearing his mother laugh in utero, I know that he is mine.
I still have a similar reaction as he does when his mother laughs, and it is not going away. I hope that it never does for Ray either.
