An Urban Inn

"Have you stayed with us before?" the innkeeper asked as she lead me to the large dining room to get us checked in.  "No, this our first time here."  Actually, this wasn't just our first time there, this was our first time ever at a Bed and Breakfast.
This past weekend my husband and I ventured to Kansas City for a mini-getaway.  We decided (actually, I wanted to and my husband graciously agreed) to stay at the Southmoreland On the Plaza, which is conveniently located just a few blocks from the Country Club Plaza.
We arrived at the home and walked up to the main front door, used the large door knocker and within moments one of the innkeepers was greeting us at the doorway.  She quickly introduced herself and led us into the home.  After a quick introduction she had my husband pull our car around to the back to the private off-street parking as she and I made our way back to meet him.  Once we brought our bags in (which she graciously helped carry in) she gave us a tour of the house.  She showed us where the evening appetizers would be served, the common rooms we were allowed to visit (an enclosed porch and veranda, the dining room, the front living room and, of course, showed us the kitchen, which she stated was the hub of the house.)
After our tour she led us up to our room. The house has 12 rooms (all named after notable Kansas Citians), as well as a carriage house above the garage.  Rooms offer different decor, as well as other options, from 2 person jacuzzi baths to private patios to fireplaces.  Each room is equipped with their own private bath, fresh apples, fresh flowers and complimentary sherry.
After putting our things away and taking a few moments to relax on our private patio, we made our way downstairs for the evening appetizers, which included different cheeses, crackers, nut mix and wine.  We sat on a porch swing in the covered porch area, listening to the music in the background and enjoying the beautiful fall colors out the large pane windows.
When it was time for dinner we ventured out to the plaza and then upon returning decided to relax in the main living room where we gathered around the TV with some of the other house guests while having our complimentary cookies and hot beverages.
The following morning we were greeted by the comforting smells of our delicious breakfast.  We sat in the enclosed veranda where we dined on poppy seed bread, banana bisque and huevos rancheros.  It was so delicious, I'm still thinking about it. Our weekend getaway was amazing and a large part of that was due to staying at this quaint urban inn.  We definitely plan to go back!
